Essent waste exports to Poland investigated

A criminal investigation has been launched into the export of waste by power group Essent to Poland, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Monday.

And Poland has asked that the Netherlands do all it can to bring the 4,000 tonnes of waste back. The shipments were made between December 2007 and December 2008.
The paper says the waste does not match the description on shipping and import documents, nor is it clear what the waste actually is. One source told the paper simply that it was very smelly.
The FD says the shipments should have been a combination of paper and plastic to be used as fuel.
A spokesman for the Polish embassy in the Netherlands said this is not the first time that exported waste has not matched official documents.
Esssent’s waste arm Essent Milieu says it is not responsible for the rubbish, blaming instead waste disposal agency N/D Recycling. N/D’s director Dirk Hamel told the paper his company would go bankrupt if it is forced to reclaim the waste.
