Promes goal sends Ajax three points clear

Ajax have opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie after their closest rivals, PSV Eindhoven, suffered their first defeat of the season in Utrecht. PSV’s misery was compounded by red cards for Nick Viergever and Jorrit Hendrix in the second half. Both sendings-off came on the advice of the VAR panel after referee Danny Makkelie initially issued yellow cards for heavy challenges. Sander van de Streek’s deflected shot gave Utrecht the lead just after half-time. Adam... More >

Netherlands labour to 2-1 win in Belarus

The Netherlands stayed on track to qualify for Euro 2020 with a hard-fought win over Belarus in Minsk on Sunday. Georginio Wijnaldum’s two first-half goals looked to have put Oranje on course for a routine victory. The Liverpool midfielder headed in Quincy Promes’s cross from close range just after the half-hour mark and doubled the scoreline 10 minutes later with a shot into the top corner from 20 metres. But the sporadically dangerous Belarusians hit back 10 minutes after half-time... More >

Oranje scrape win against Northern Ireland

Oranje took a big step towards qualifying for next year’s European football championships, but only after surviving a major scare against Northern Ireland. The Dutch struggled to break down a stubborn Northern Irish defence in a first half of few chances in Rotterdam, with Georginio Wijnaldum coming closest to breaking the deadlock with a header. The second half offered more of the same stodgy fare until the visitors turned the game on its head by taking the lead in the... More >

Malen hits two as PSV keep pace with Ajax

PSV Eindhoven stayed level on points with Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie, but it took them more than an hour to break down a stubborn VVV Venlo. Mark van Bommel’s side scored three times in 10 minutes, including Donyell Malen’s ninth of the season, before Tobais Pachonik pulled one back with a searing volley. However, Malen had the last word with his second goal on 86 minutes. Earlier on Sunday Ajax laboured to a 2-0 victory over ADO... More >
